GEORGE MASON 2, GEORGETOWN 1 (8 INNINGS)
Wednesday afternoon's game was a low-scoring affair that needed to go to extras to be decided. Mason's starting pitcher Carly Cooper (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 K) went seven innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters. It was also the second time this season in which Cooper did not allow a walk in the game.
The first run of the game was scored in the bottom of the second inning by the Patriots. After Emily Lampela (1-3, R, 2B) doubled to left center, Sydney Bales (1-3, 2B, SB) put the ball in play to the right side, where Georgetown's second baseman, Brooke Rebhan (1-3, R), committed a fielding error. The ball rolled into right field and Lampela was able to score from second.
Georgetown's offense were stifled by Cooper's pitching and Mason's defense, as they would be held scoreless for the first five innings. However, in the top of the sixth, the Hoyas had runners on second and third after back-to-back singles to start the inning. Third up to bat was Emily Strittmatter (1-2, RBI), who hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to score Rebhan from third. That would be the only run scored in the inning, as the next out was a fly out and the last would be Cooper's career-high eighth strike out.
The senior from Seneca Rocks, Wva., would strike out the next two batters to start the seventh to get to 10 on the day.
The score would remain at one run a piece going into the top of the eighth inning, where Jordan Tallman (1.0 IP, 0 R) would toss a 1-2-3 perfect inning on eight pitches. In the bottom frame, leadoff hitter Maddy Myers (1-4, R, RBI, HR) hit her first-career walk-off home run to left field. Tallman would be credited with her third win of the season and the Patriots snap a five-game losing skid.
