FAIRFAX, Va. – Behind a season-best performance from goalkeeper
Meghan Deehan, the George Mason women's lacrosse team downed rival George Washington at home on Saturday afternoon, 13-8.
The graduate student posted a season-high 14 saves to go with a caused turnover and a game-high three ground balls. She anchored a Mason defense that allowed just two second half goals while going a perfect 19-19 on clears.
It looked like the Patriots (8-5, 2-3) might run away with it early, as they opened the game with four-straight goals in the first five minutes of the game with goals from four different players. However, the Revolutionaries (3-10, 0-5) responded with three-straight goals of their own out of a timeout to trail by just one after the first 15 minutes.
George Washington scored just 50 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game, and the teams traded points throughout the stanza. Mason never trailed however, always having a response for a Revolutionary goal while Deehan made five saves as Mason led 7-6 at the halftime break.
The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle, with George Washington scoring the lone goal with four minutes remaining in the stanza to tie the game at seven-all. The two goalies combined for six saves while GW forced Mason into six turnovers as the teams went into the final stanza knotted up.
The Patriots came out of the break firing, scoring five-straight goals in less than seven minutes to take a 12-7 lead. Mason took eight total shots, scoring on six of them.
Daniella Jimenez sparked the offense in the final quarter, tallying all three of her team-high points in the final 15 minutes, including bookending Mason's six goals and dishing out an assist. The Patriot defense allowed just four shots while forcing GW into four turnovers en route to the 13-8 victory.
