GEORGE MASON 5, LOYOLA CHICAGO 6 (8 INNINGS)
The series between Mason and Loyola Chicago had been tightly contested all weekend, and Sunday's finale was no different. After a scoreless first inning, the Patriots would strike first in the the top of the second inning with a two-run home run by Sydney Bales (1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR). The senior from La Plata, Md., swung at the first pitch of her at-bat and connected to left center, scoring Elyssa DeRosa (2-4, R) as well.
The Ramblers would erase the early two-run Patriot lead in the following half inning. With Riley Owens (1-4, R, SB) on first and Jocelyn Currie (2-4, R, RBI, 2B, SB) at third, the two initiated a double steal that resulted in the first Loyola run of the day. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Haley Wallace (1-3, RBI, BB) drew a walk, which scored Owens.
After a scoreless fourth inning on both sides, the Ramblers struck again for three in the bottom of the fifth; this time, the runs came from two home runs. With a runner on third, Sydney Barnett (1-3, R, 2 RBI, BB, HR) hit a two-run shot over the center field wall. Teagan Sopczak (2-4, 2 R, RBI, HR) capped the inning off with a solo home run.
The Patriots would answer in the top of the sixth when pinch hitter
Zoe Vozick (0-0, RBI, BB) drew a bases-loaded walk on a full count, scoring
Marlaina Bozek (1-4, R). Unfortunately, that would be the only run generated in the inning.
After a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, the Patriots were back up to bat facing a 5-3 deficit with three outs remaining in the game. Leadoff hitter
Kamryn Inman (0-2, R, 2 BB), who leads the team in walks, drew a walk to start the inning.
Up next to bat was freshman pinch hitter
Kaleigh Friend (1-1, R, 2 RBI, HR), who not only recorded her first collegiate hit, but also hit her first collegiate home run. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native launched the ball into left center and tied the game 5-5.
The Ramblers would not be able to score in the bottom of the seventh, so the game went to extras for the second consecutive game.
The Patriots were able to get two runners aboard by way of an
Emily Lampela (0-2, HBP) hit by pitch and another drawn walk by Inman. However, the Ramblers were able to get out of the inning unscathed, stranding the two Patriots.
The Ramblers were able to walk-off the Patriots for the second time this weekend in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on second and third and with only one out, Jocelyn Currie (2-4, R, RBI, 2B, SB) flared a single to shallow center that was just out of reach of a diving
Charlotte Montgomery (0-3). Sopczak was able to score from third and end the game.
