FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team is back in Atlantic 10 action this weekend when it travels to the site of this season's A-10 Tournament, Duquesne, to play the Dukes on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams are coming off of conference losses, with Duquesne falling to St. Bonaventure, 19-6 on the road. Mason battled nationally-ranked Richmond into overtime, where it ultimately fell 15-14 in extra time.
The Patriots and Dukes will meet for the ninth time in program history, with all meetings coming as conference opponents. The teams are tied 4-4 in the series, and Mason will look to win its' second-straight after a 17-11 victory at home in 2023.
PATRIOT POINTS
- Shannon Tuozzo leads the Patriots with 36 goals and is second the Atlantic 10 with 3.40 goals and 4.20 points per game
- The graduate student also leads the team in points (45), caused turnovers (8), ground balls (22) and draw controls (63)
- Five other Patriots have tallied double-figure goals: Dahlia Trippel (21), Chloe Reed (19), Peyton Farley (17) Morgan Gunn (17) and Kaitlyn Bestick (11)
- Tuozzo and Riley Ellis, have dished out a team-high nine assists on the year
- Defensively, Tuozzo, Besick and Ciara Curtis have tallied a team-high eight caused turnovers
- Lauren Distad is second on the team with 61 draw controls, as she and Tuozzo are the only two teammates in the Atlantic 10 with 60+ draw controls
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Duquesne sits at 6-4 overall this season, including 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play with a win over George Washington last Saturday. Out of conference, the Dukes have a common opponent in Radford, which they downed on the road, 14-12 in early March. The Dukes have fallen to Richmond (20-9) and St. Bonaventure (19-6) in A-10 action.
On offense, two players have scored 20+ goals, led by Corrine Webb's 24. Mackenzie Leszczynski is right behind her with 22 goals to go with eight assists for a team-high 30 points. Emelie Curtis paces the offense with 15 assists on the year, good for third-most in the Atlantic 10.
Defensively Hanna Pawela leads the A-10 with 4.40 ground balls and 3.60 caused turnovers per game. Both statistics also rank third nationally among all of Division I. In the draw circle, Emily King leads the team with 34 wins, with Leszczynski just trailing her with 32.
