GEORGE MASON 12, TOWSON 4 (5 INNINGS)
The Patriots broke the game wide open in the top of the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. All seven of those runs came with two outs in the inning.
With
Rachel Warrens (2-3, R, RBI, 2B, BB, SB) on third,
Elyssa DeRosa (0-2, 2 R, 2 BB) reached first on a Towson first baseman fielding error, which allowed Warrens to score. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded,
Kamryn Inman (1-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB), who leads the team in walks, drew a four-pitch walk which scored DeRosa. The very next at-bat, pinch hitter
Kaleigh Friend (0-0, RBI, BB) drew an RBI walk on a full count, extending the Patriot lead to three.
Up next to bat was catcher
Logan Pickford (1-3, R, 3 RBI, 2B) who hit a bases-clearing double to right field. Pickford would quickly be rewarded by reaching home on a Warrens RBI double of her own, which capped the seven-run inning.
After Towson got two runs back in the bottom of the first, the Patriots tacked on three more runs in the top of the second inning.
After
Maddy Myers (0-2, R, 2 BB) and DeRosa led the inning off with back-to-back walks, freshman designated player
Emily Lampela (2-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) launched her second home run of the season over the right field wall. The Alexandria, Va., native now leads the team in home runs.
The Tigers would pick up another run in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI single.
After a quiet third inning from both sides, the final two Patriot scores occurred in the top of the fourth inning. After Lampela singled and stole second, Inman hit an RBI double down the right field line. Inman would soon score as well, as the very next batter,
Charlotte Montgomery (1-2, R, RBI), hit an RBI single up the middle.
The Tigers would score just one more time in the bottom of the fifth inning, but after the third out was recorded, the game was called on account of the Run-Ahead Rule.
Starting pitcher
Carly Cooper (5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) struck out four Tigers and secured her fourth win of the season. It was also her sixth complete game of the season. The senior now leads the pitching staff in wins.
