Game Recap: Softball |
FAIRFAX, Va. – On St. Patrick's Day and Mason's Youth Day, the softball team (8-18, 1-2 A-10) lost their Sunday finale to Dayton (12-9, 2-1 A-10) 5-2 at the George Mason Softball Complex. The Flyers hand the Patriots their first Atlantic 10 Conference series loss for the second year in a row.

PATRIOT HIGHLIGHTS

  • After Dayton scored in the top of the first inning, Mason tied the game in the bottom half with an Elyssa DeRosa bases-loaded single.

  • The Patriots would take the lead in the bottom of the second with a Marlaina Bozek sacrifice fly RBI.

  • After Mason's second run, Izzy Kemp and the Dayton defense would retire 16 of the next 17 Patriot batters.
  • The Patriot defense recorded the game's two only double plays in the third and fifth innings.

  • Maddy Myers' single in the bottom of the first inning was just short of a three-run home run. The graduate student's career-hit total is now at 99.

GEORGE MASON 2, DAYTON 5

Similar to what had happened in Game #2 of yesterday's doubleheader, the Patriots and the Flyers traded runs in the first inning. After leadoff hitter Emma Schutter (2-4, 3 R, 2 SB) started the game with a single up the middle, followed by a stolen base and a productive Flyer ground out, cleanup hitter Maddie Kapsimalis (3-3, 4 RBI) hit her first of four RBI on the day.

The Patriots answered immediately in the bottom half of the opening frame. Leadoff hitter Rachel Warrens (1-3, R, SB, HBP) was hit by pitch by starting pitcher Izzy Kemp (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 HBP), followed by a four-pitch walk by Marlaina Bozek (0-1, RBI, SF). Up third to bat was Maddy Myers (1-3), who hit a high-arching ball that the fence at the George Mason Softball Complex just kept inside. What was less than a foot away from being a three-run home run turned out to be an off-the-top-of-the-wall single which loaded the bases for cleanup hitter Elyssa DeRosa (1-3, RBI).

On the first pitch, DeRosa lined a single through the left side, scoring Warrens from third and tying the game. That would be the only run generated by the Patriots, however, as the next three batters would go out in order.

Starting pitcher Jordan Tallman (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) would record a 1-2-3 inning in the second to shut the Flyers out. Tallman would finish the game with two strikeouts.

Mason would take the lead in the bottom of the second inning with more long, methodical at-bats. After leadoff batter Kamryn Inman (0-2, R, BB, SB) drew a walk on a full count, the sophomore would steal second and move to third on a Warrens single. Bozek would then lift a ball to right center that was tailing away from Dayton's centerfielder, but right fielder Kaelene Walter (0-3) caught the ball in time. Inman tagged up and scored, giving the Patriots a 2-1 advantage going into the third inning.

After Mason's second run was scored, Kemp and the Dayton defense would retire 16 of the next 17 Patriot batters, with the lone Patriot reaching base was by way of a hit by pitch in the sixth inning.

In the top of the third, the Flyers tied the game off a Patriot throwing error which scored Molly Grace (0-2, R, BB) from second. Kapsimalis would do damage again at the plate with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Schutter from third.

Kylie Wilkerson (3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K) would come in to pitch in relief to start the fifth inning. The freshman would finish out the rest of the game striking out two batters and allowing two runs, with only one being earned.

Dayton would score two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Mason's defense, particularly from the glove of Warrens, recorded tough outs to prevent the Flyers from doing any more damage. Not only did the graduate student shortstop make an incrediable over-the-shoulder catch in the third inning, she helped turn both of the game's only double plays.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, the Mason side would be retired in order in four of the last five innings, and Dayton would go on to win 5-2 in Sunday's finale.
