RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team fell to a hot-shooting VCU team on Saturday afternoon, falling 24-12 on the road.
Dahlia Trippel led the Patriots (6-4, 0-2) with a hat trick to match her career-high for the fourth time this season.
It was a high-scoring opening frame, beginning just a minute in with a tally from
Riley Ellis, but the Rams (2-6, 1-1) responded just 45 seconds later. Mason scored four times in the first quarter, but VCU responded with three two goal spurts to lead 7-4 after 15 minutes.
Morgan Gunn opened the scoring for Mason in the second just over a minute in to the second quarter, but VCU again responded with two goals to lead 9-5 with 11:22 remaining. The Patriots scored three over the next four to cut the lead back to two, 10-8, with 47 seconds remaining in the half, but VCU scored with just six seconds remaining to regain momentum into the break.
The Rams opened the third quarter with six-straight goals to push the lead to 17-8 at the 8:26 mark of the third, before back-to-back goals from Trippel and
Chloe Reed brought Mason into double-figures. However, VCU scored seven of the last nine goals of the game en route to the 24-12 victory.
