Mason Closes Non-League Action at Longwood

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team will play its' final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday when it travels to Longwood for a midweek matchup.
 
The last time out, Mason dropped its' Atlantic 10 opener to UMass, 20-8 at home. On the other hand, Longwood picked up the first win of its' season with a road victory at Youngstown State, 16-10.
 
All-time, Mason holds a 6-2 advantage over the Lancers. Longwood snapped a six-game losing streak last season however, picking up an 8-7 victory in Fairfax.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
  • Shannon Tuozzo leads the Patriots and the Atlantic 10 with 3.75 goals and 4.50 points per game, and has scored a hat trick in all but one game this season
  • The graduate student also leads the team in points (36), caused turnovers (8) and ground balls (19) and is second in draw controls (40)
  • Four other Patriots have tallied double-figure goals: Dahlia Trippel (16), Chloe Reed (14), Morgan Gunn (14) and Peyton Farley (12)
  • Pacing the offense is Riley Ellis, who has dished out a team-high eight assists on the year
  • Defensively, Kaitlyn Besick has tallied a team-high eight caused turnovers
  • Lauren Distad leads the team with 50 draw controls, and her 6.25 are good for third in the Atlantic 10. As a team this season, Mason is winning the draw control battle 125-86
 
SCOUTING THE LANCERS
After dropping their opening four games, Longwood got into the win column over the weekend with a 16-10 win over Youngstown State on the road. The Patriots and Lancers share just one common opponent this season in Kent State, who downed Longwood 13-12 on March 7.
 
Two players lead the Longwood offense with 17 points each, with two very different stat lines. Riley McDonald has tallied a team-high 13 goals with four assists, while Emily Cate Smith has dished out a team-best 12 assists to go with five goals. McDonald has been strong from the free position, scoring five of seven opportunities. Sophia Passa and Holly Hill are second on the team with 13 points each.
 
In the draw circle, Julia Koenig leads the Lancers with 16 on the season, while Passa is second with 10. Defensively, Miranda Helfenbein has caused a team-high nine turnovers and is second with 11 ground balls. Bridget Robinson paces the team with 13 ground balls on the year. Robinson has also started all five games for the Lancers, averaging 10 saves per game with a .490 save percentage.
 
UP NEXT 
The Patriots will take the short trip to Richmond, Va. for their first Atlantic 10 game on the road at VCU. Opening draw with the Rams is set for 1 p.m.
