Men's Track & Field 2/24/2024 7:04:00 PM
Fairfax, Va.- The Patriots ended the A10 Indoor Championships with four gold medals, five silvers, and eight bronze medals to record a total of 17 medals for George Mason. The men's team finished in second place with 142 points and the women's team placed third with a final score of 89. George Mason exceeded expectations and fought for the top spot until the very end in both the men's and women's side. Rhode Island became the men's champions once again and VCU have won their fifth straight women's championship.

Day 2 Recap:
Day two of the Indoor Championships began with the triple jump, in which Geni Roberts overcame his opponents and earned the silver medal. That was only the beginning of the medals that George Mason would be winning. Jarett Flaker earned the first gold medal for the Patriots on day two after sprinting past the opposition and having to wait in suspense for the second heat to finalize. Once the gold was given to Jarett, the celebrations erupted and pushed the remaining athletes to achieve their best performance.

Terrian Smith competed in the high jump and won the bronze medal for jumping over 2.01m. Michka-Mae Hyde also brought back a bronze medal in the women's 800m run with a time of 2:09.82 but that was not it. Michka-Mae Hyde also entered her name into George Mason history by placing 4th in the all-time records list. Joseph Queen stepped up to bring home a silver medal in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:26.95. Kelsey Sebwe was competing at the sand pit with the triple jump and secured the bronze medal after jumping a distance of 11.67m.

The 4x800m relays team included Alex Lombardo, Joseph Queen, Caleb Hymans, and Paul McClain which resulted to be a perfect combination. The four runners secured a gold medal finishing the race with a time of 7:32.80 and entered the all-time records list in the 10th spot. They were not the only relay team to achieve a medal, the next event was the 4x400m relays and George Mason was hungry for more medals. Calvin Meyer, Isaiah Carter, Ryan Brooks, and Jarett Flaker were the next team to step onto the track. The bronze medal was achieved by the group with a time of 3:15.38 and they had the chance to step onto the podium.

While the final running events were occurring, there was one athlete stealing the show in the high jump. Abby Weening recently completed the pentathlon in the first day and achieved the silver medal after finishing all five events in one day. Abby did not stop there and was into the final three for the high jump in hopes to bring back a medal. The Patriots were chanting and cheering her name to push her to success, and the bleachers roared with excitement when she jumped over 1.73m and added a bronze medal to her collection.

Quotable:
"We were extremely proud of how our athletes competed over the last two day", said head coach Andrew Gerard. "Track and field is a sport all about the numbers and on paper, pre-meet, the form charts had us scoring 57 points and placing in 6th on the women's side and scoring 104 points and getting second on the men's side. Clearly, we substantially exceeded the predictions by wide margins. Our athletes showed up and simply competed well. Before the meet we asked something bigger than themselves- to collectively raise each other's energy, expectations and level of achievement. We absolutely did that and the "value added" showed up in our performances and ultimately our scores. The staff is super proud of the job our athletes did over the last two days. Now, it's on to outdoors".
