Fairfax, Va.- George Mason have completed the first day of the A10 Indoor Championships with many noteworthy performances. George Mason leads in both the men's and women's championship standings. The women's team has a ten-point lead over UMass Amherst and the men's team has a two-point lead over Rhode Island.
Arsalan Yaqubi inaugurated the meet in weight throw and earned the silver medal to set the tone for a championship run. Arsalan set a personal best and strengthened his spot in the all-time records list after finishing in second place with a mark of 19.03m.
Arun Mantena was the next athlete to bring back a medal for George Mason. Arun competed in the long jump and placed in third with a distance of 7.13m.
Amber Askelson has permanently proven that she is the best pole vaulter in the conference. Amber earned the gold medal jumping over 3.77m with the least number of misses.
Abby Weening also entered her name into the medal list after competing in five events in one day for the pentathlon and winning the silver medal. The placements went down to the final event and Abby finalized her score with 3557 points.
Walt Bannerman has been dominating the pole vault field for the entirety of the indoor season and was able to conclude the story with a gold medal jumping over 4.90m.
Colton Ocetnik also stepped onto the podium after finishing in third and earning a bronze medal.
Kate O'Neill showed up and snatched a bronze medal in the women's 5,000m run to add to her many awards.
Mason Love ran through the pack and fought to the front to take back home a silver medal in the men's 5,000m run with a time of 14:13.54. Mason achieved a school record as well together with his silver medal.
Most of the running events were holding the prelims in order to qualify for the finals tomorrow.
Albert Asare and
Dean Johnson both did the job and qualified for the men's 60m hurdles finals.
Calvin Meyer and
Jarett Flaker were also able to qualify for the men's 400m dash finals.
Nathan Polizzi competed in the men's 500m dash and qualified for the finals with a time of 1:05.31. The trio of
Alex Lombardo,
Micah Harris, and
Paul McClain have qualified for the finals in the men's 800m run.
Joseph Queen did not want to miss out in the finals and qualified for the next round finishing top of his heat with a time of 2:26.58.
Isaiah Carter and
Max Karen also booked a spot in the final for the men's 200m dash.
Freshman
Susan Adenitan finished top of her heat in the women's 60m with a time of 7.57 and will be in the finals tomorrow. Susan did not stop there, she also qualified for the women's 200m dash together with
Noelle Foss.
Michka-Mae Hyde competed in the women's 800m run and also qualified for the next round with a time of 2:12.44. McKenzie continued her impressive indoor performances and finished top of her heat with a time of 2:55.65 and will be competing in the finals.
George Mason will be back in action tomorrow at 9 am for the second day of the A10 Indoor Championships.
