WILMINGTON, N.C. – The George Mason softball team lost 2-0 to tournament host UNCW on the first day of the UNCW Tournament at Boseman Field.
UNCW's Kara Hammock (7.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 9 K) pitched a nine-strikeout complete game shutout and only allowed one hit. For the Patriots, starting pitcher
Carly Cooper (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) allowed just three hits.
The game, which took one hour and forty-one minutes, saw six 1-2-3 innings between the two schools, with the Patriots recording two and the Seahawks recording four.
The only two runs scored in the game happened in the game's first frame. In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Skylar Stockton was hit by pitch and later stole second base. Tayler Vitola then drew a walk. During Mackenzie Amodeo's at bat, the Seahawks successfully attempted a double steal, putting both runners in scoring position. Amodeo then cleared the bases with a double to right field.
The Patriots were retired in order for the first three innings of the game. The only hit recorded by Mason was by
Rachel Warrens (1-3, SB), who hit a leadoff single down the leftfield line in the top of the fourth. Warrens would also steal second and eventually advanced to third off an
Elyssa DeRosa (0-2) ground out. Warrens would ultimately be tagged out at home by shortstop Mary Sobataka after Maralina Bozek (0-3) put the ball in play.
The last effort for the Patriots to tie the game was in the bottom of the seventh inning, when
Elyssa DeRosa drew a leadoff walk and would later advance to second on a wild pitch. Unfortunately for Mason, the next three batters would go down in order to end the game.
