Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason women's tennis team split two road matches this weekend.
On Saturday the Patriots traveled down I95 to Fredericksburg to begin the weekend with a 5-2 win against Mary Washington. Mason dropped its match on Sunday in Annapolis against Navy, 7-0.
Mason lost the doubles point against UMW but stormed back to take five of the six singles matches.
At the top position, Mason's
Emily Wirt defeated Hagino, 6-2, 6-3.
Dana Edson won by the same score at the No. 6 singles. Three matches went to a tie-breaker set. The Patriots
Cenan Liu won the first set, 6-3, and the tiebreaker set 10-8. M. Rout won the first set, before dropping a close second set, 7-6(4), then winning 10-8 in the tiebreaker set at No. 5 singles. In the No. 2 singles positions, R. Chauhan came from behind after losing the first set, but went on to win 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
"It was a difficult match against Mary Washington, they always play us very tough," said Coach Steve Curtis.
Against Navy, Mason almost pulled out the doubles point as the team of Chauhan and Liu won at No. 3 and Wirt and Edson lost at #1. The doubles point came down to the #2 team of Splett and Siegel. The Mason duo lost in a very tight match.
Navy then swept the singles matches.
"We played considerably better today. With two of our players in the lineup others got a chance to play against a top team like Navy. Overall, the weekend was a positive experience."
