Fairfax, Va. – Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason Golf Program released its 2023-24 golf schedule, announced by head coach
Greg Pieczynski.
"We want to play an elite tournament schedule that allows our team to compete against the best teams in the country on the most challenging championship venues," said Pieczynski. "We want to compete on all types of great courses in all areas of the country because it will not only improve us as golfers, but it will also create more memorable life experiences for our team. This year's schedule once again meets to that high standard."
The Patriots will participate in 10 regular season tournaments, five of which are slated for the fall season and five for the spring season, plus the Atlantic-10 Conference Championship.
The season will open September 3-4 at the Red Bandana Invitational, hosted by Power 5 school Boston College, at Turning Stone Resort which hosted a PGA Tour event from 2007-2010. The annual Red Bandanna football game is held each season to honor 9/11 hero Welles Crowther, a BC alum who heroically sacrificed himself to save many lives during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center buildings on September 11th, 2001. This is the second year in a row Mason will have played in this 54-hole two-day tournament held in Verona, N.Y. It will feature the Kaluhyat course, featuring six lakes and 50 feet of elevation. This year's 15-team field will also include West Virginia.
To close out September, the Green and Gold will travel to A-10 conference foe Davidson in North Carolina to play in the River Run Collegiate for the third straight season. Mason finished fifth overall at the 7,317-yard, par 72 course in 2021.
In October the Patriots will travel to Tampa, Florida to play in the USF Invitational at the Southern Hills Plantation (Oct. 9-10). The University of South Florida has had one of the top golf programs in the country over the past several years. Since 2015 the Bulls have qualified for nine straight NCAA Tournaments, three NCAA Finals, and one NCAA Match Play where they finished 6
th nationally in 2015.
George Mason Golf will then travel north to Kettering, Ohio to play at the Dayton Invitational at the NCR Country Club (Oct. 16-17). The South Course at NCR Country Club designed by famed architect, Dick Wilson, is ranked #68 on Golfweek's Top-100 Classic list. It has hosted numerous major championships including the PGA Championship, US Senior Open, US Women's Open, and US Mid Am. The 13-team field will be highlighted by last year's #1 ranked and perennial Big 10 champion Illinois.
The Patriots wrap up the fall season on the last weekend of October at the Bryan National Collegiate, hosted by UNC Greensboro which qualified for NCAA Regional Tournament this past year. This will be the first year for this event and venue.
Spring Schedule Sneak Preview: The Patriots Spring Championship schedule includes five tournaments leading up to the Atlantic 10 Championship, April 26-28 at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Florida.
The season begins again in late-February in Puerto Rico at the Dorado Beach Collegiate at the TPC Sugarcane Dorado Beach Course.
The Green and Gold will host the Fourth Annual Ross Collegiate at the par 72 Mid Pines Golf Club, the historic original Donald Ross Course, in Pinehurst, NC (Mar. 11-12). The Patriots best finish was a third-place finish in 2021.
Mason will participate in the William & Mary Intercollegiate played at the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Va., March 25-26. The Patriots have played in the tournament the past two seasons. Mason finished fourth in 2022 led by a third-place finish from Will Halamandaris.
To begin April, Mason will make a trip out west to participate in the Chambers Bay Invitational for the second straight season, hosted by Seattle University. The event will be played at Chambers Bay Golf Course, host of the 2015 U.S. Open Championship. Last year, freshman
Samir Davidov carded a top-10 individual performance.
To close out the regular season, the Patriots will play in the 46
th Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State.
