Gartland, Shields and Trimble Earn VaSID All-State Honors

FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason starting pitcher Chad Gartland was selected Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State First Team pitcher, while starter Ben Shields was named All-State Second Team pitcher and South Trimble was voted All-State Second Team utility player, the organization announced on Wednesday.
 
Gartland, a native of Rochester, N.Y., finished the season with a 7-2 record and 3.39 ERA in 17 appearances with 13 starts.  He was named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year and A-10 First Team All-Conference.
 
Gartland was selected Winston-Salem NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team starting pitcher.  He tossed a complete game with five strikeouts and two walks in the Patriots 11-3 win over Northeastern in an elimination game on Saturday, June 3.
 
Gartland was also named Most Outstanding Performer of the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship after tossing 9.2 innings over two appearances.  He threw a season-high 120 pitches over 8.0 innings on day one against No. 3 Dayton and worked 1.2 innings to earn the save in a 3-2 win over the Flyers in an elimination game, finishing the tournament with a 2.79 ERA and .257 opposing batting average with nine strikeouts and a save.
 
Among A-10 leaders including the post-season, Gartland led the league in innings pitched (98.1), tied for first in wins (7), was second in ERA (.3.39) and complete games (2), fourth in strikeouts (86), fifth in saves (2) and sixth in opponent average (.240).  He pitched at least 6.0 innings in 10 of his 13 starts including the post-season.
 
Gartland helped the Patriots post the lowest ERA in the A-10 (5.02), the lowest opponent batting average in program history (.258) and the most total team strikeouts in school history (516).  He tied for first in the club on wins with a 7-2 record and led the team in innings pitched (98.1) and was second in strikeouts (86).
 
Shields, From Boston, Mass., finished the season with a 7-4 record and 4.69 ERA in 17 appearances with 16 starts. 
 
Selected Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference pitcher, Shields led the team in starts (16) and strikeouts (107), tied for first in wins (7) and ranked second in innings pitched (80.2).  Nationally, he tied for 30th in the NCAA in strikeouts (107).  Shields pitched at least 5.0 innings in 11 of his 16 starts.
 
Among A-10 leaders, Shields ranked first in starts (16) and strikeouts (107), tied for first in wins (7) and was sixth in innings pitched (80.2).  He walked just 36 batters, tied for the 16th-fewest in the league.
 
Shields helped the Patriots set a new program record for strikeouts in a season (516), post the lowest team ERA in the Atlantic 10 and the lowest by the program since 2018 (5.02) and record the lowest opponent batting average in school history (.258).
 
Shields was selected Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 3.  He struck out a career-high 14 batters with just one walk over 7.0 strong innings in the Patriots' 7-6 victory at Rhode Island on Friday, March 31.
 
Trimble, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., started all 62 games for the Patriots including the post-season.  He finished the season with a .335 batting average and led the club in at-bats (236), hits (79), runs scored (61), walks (36) and stolen bases (30), was second in doubles (17) and fourth in RBI (38).  He recorded at least one hit in 47 games and posted 24 multi-hit games during the season.
 
Trimble was selected to the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team.  He went 10-for-23 with three RBI and eight runs scored and had at least one hit in all six games.
 
Trimble tied for 27th in the NCAA in stolen bases (30) as the Patriots set the school record for stolen bases in a season (164).  He also helped the Patriots finish the season with the best team batting average since 2015 (.274), post the best OBP since 2010 (.374) and Mason was the toughest team in the A-10 to strike out.
 
The 2023 VaSID All-State Team has nine of the Commonwealth's 14 NCAA Division I schools represented.  The University of Virginia led the Commonwealth with nine All-State honorees, followed by Old Dominion and Virginia Military Institute (4), George Mason, Virginia Tech and William & Mary (3), James Madison (2) and single selections from Longwood and Richmond.
