NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Monday that a record 3,954 student-athletes received Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction for 2022-23. This is the highest total in league history and is the fourth year in a row the total number of honorees has topped 3,500.

George Mason had the fifth-most honorees with 289 student-athletes honored in the 14-team conference. Mason had 191 student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA or better and 30 with a 4.0 GPA. The senior class accounted for 104 of the nominees for the Patriots.

Massachusetts had the most honorees with 371, followed by Davidson with 318. Fordham was third with 316 student-athletes honored, and Saint Joseph's (308) and George Mason (289) finished out the top five. The class is made up of 16.5 percent (653 total honorees) first year students, 22.4 percent (886 total) sophomores, 21.0 percent (832 total) juniors and 30.4 percent (1,202 total) seniors. There were 339 graduate students honored, comprising 8.6 percent of the class. Both the senior and graduate totals and percentages are increases over last year.

The total surpasses the record set in 2020-21 of 3,845 honorees. This year there were 327 student-athletes that achieved a 4.0 GPA, representing over eight percent of the total number of honorees nearly 22 student-atheltes per school with perfect GPAs across the 15 member institutions.  Two-thirds (a remarkable 66 percent) of the honorees, equaling 2,610 student-athletes, recorded a 3.5 GPA or better for the 2022-23 academic year. Additionally, the average number of honorees per school was 263.6.

Designed to recognize excellence in the classroom, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport at a full member institution must have a combined fall and spring semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year to be selected for the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Both freshmen and graduate students are eligible to receive the award. In each of the last six years, the league honored over 3,000 student-athletes per year.

The top three women's sports were women's cross country/track & field with 493 honorees, women's soccer (308 honorees) and rowing (300 honorees). The top three men's sports were men's cross county/track & field (384 honorees), men's soccer (312 honorees) and baseball (308 honorees).

The increases were due in part to the additional of Loyola Chicago to the league as well as the addition of men's lacrosse as the league's 22nd championship sports. Men's lacrosse had 56.2 percent of its student-athletes earn honor roll distinction.
