FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of the series to St. Bonaventure, 4-3, in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
Four of the Patriots last six home games have been decided by one run.
Mason (19-20, 6-6 A10) redshirt freshman
Konner Eaton and St. Bonaventure (6-28, 3-9 A10) sophomore starter Luke Roggenburk each allowed just one hit through the first three innings.
Eaton struck out the side in the top of the first on nine pitches.
The Bonnies took the lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, senior catcher Jackson DeJohn doubled to left-center and senior third baseman Jack Putney followed with a RBI-single to put St. Bonaventure in front, 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Mason junior center fielder
Jordan Smith led off with a double down the left field line. With one out, freshman designated hitter
James Quinn-Irons singled to left to put runners on the corners. Sophomore left fielder
Reece Woody then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, with Smith coasting home to tie the game, 1-1.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth.
Putney singled up the middle with one out and with two outs, senior left fielder Thomas Grilli singled to center to put runners on first and second. Freshman right fielder Evan Dieter then drove in a run with a single to left-center to give the Bonnies a 2-1 lead.
The Patriots pulled even in the home half of the inning when sophomore catcher
Connor Dykstra belted his team-leading sixth home run of the season with a one-out, solo home blast over the fence in left-center to even the score, 2-2.
Mason freshman reliever
Owen Stewart retired the nine batters he faced from the seventh through the ninth.
After four scoreless innings, St. Bonaventure took the lead in the top of the 11th against Patriots graduate students
Mason Posey and
Nolan Lamere.
With one out, Putney doubled to left-center. With two-outs, Grilli drove in a run with a double to center and Dieter followed with a RBI-single to make it 4-2.
The Patriots put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning against Bonnies sophomore Bryce Hediger. Quinn-Irons legged out an infield single and Woody followed with a RBI-double to make it a one-run game at 4-3.
Bonnies graduate student Liam Devine entered from the bullpen and recorded a fly out to end the game.
For the Patriots, Eaton allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out 10 without a walk in 6.0 innings. Stewart tossed 3.0 hitless innings. Posey (1-3) surrendered one run on one hit in 1.1 innings and took the loss. Lamere gave up one run on two hits and retired two batters in his outing.
For the Bonnies, Roggenburk allowed two runs on eight hits in 9.0 innings. Hediger (1-5) gave up one run on three hits to earn his first win of the season. Devine recorded the final out to notch his fifth save of the season.
Quinn-Irons went 3-for-5 and scored a run and Woody was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Patriots continue their seven-game homestand against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
