Patriots Set Stolen Base Record, Sweep Doubleheader From St. Bonaventure

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team swept a doubleheader from St. Bonaventure, 7-6 in 11 innings in the first game and 17-5 in the nightcap, on Friday at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

The Patriots stole three bases in game one and five bases in game two to set the program record for the most stolen bases in a season with 119. 

Sophomore first baseman Reece Woody went 7-for-9 with six RBI and three runs scored, while freshman left fielder James Quinn-Irons drove in five runs and scored three runs over the two games. 

In the second game, the Patriots scored a season-high 17 runs on a season-best 19 hits.

GAME ONE

Mason (18-19, 5-5 A10) graduate student starter Ben Shields didn't allow a hit over the first four innings while St. Bonaventure (2-27, 2-8 A10) senior starter Tripp Breen allowed just one hit through three frames.

The Patriots sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and scored five runs on six hits to take the lead.  The first seven batters all reached base.

Sophomore catcher Connor Dykstra led off with a double to right-center, Quinn-Irons was hit by a pitch and junior designated hitter Mark Trotta singled to the pitcher to load the bases.  Woody then legged out an infield single to second base, with Dykstra crossing the plate to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.

Junior right fielder Derek Wood laced a two-run single to right field, with Trotta and Quinn-Irons scoring on the play to make the score 3-0.

Senior second baseman Brett Stallings kept the inning going with a bunt single to load the bases for a second time.  Sophomore shortstop Carsen Pracht kept the line moving with a RBI-single to left-center to increase the lead to 4-0.

Senior third baseman South Trimble plated another run with a sacrifice fly to center, with Wood coasting home from third to give the Patriots a 5-0 lead.

The Bonnies batted around in the top of the fifth against Shields and Mason graduate student reliever Nolan Lamere and scored five runs on three hits and three walks to tie the game, 5-5.

With the bases loaded on a pair of walks and a single and no outs, junior second baseman Kyle Caccamise drove in the Bonnies first run of the game with a single to right field.  Junior center fielder Adam Rankie then cleared the bases with a three-run double to the gap in right center to make it a one-run game, 5-4.

With runners on first and third, the Patriots summoned Lamere from the bullpen.  St. Bonaventure sophomore designated hitter Mark Darakjy drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt to even the score, 5-5.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, sophomore shortstop Artin Biageyian doubled to left field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI-single by Cassamise to put the Bonnies ahead, 6-5.

Mason graduate student Kyle Smith tossed three innings of one-hit ball from the seventh through the ninth and junior Christian Mracna pitched the 10th and 11th innings and didn't allow a hit.

The Patriots rallied in the home half of the ninth. 

Senior pinch-hitter Craig Miles, Jr. led off with a single through the left side and sophomore outfielder Alex Knapp entered as a pinch runner.  After Pracht walked, the Bonnies made the call to the bullpen with sophomore Ryan O'Connell taking over on the mound for graduate student Liam Devine.

Trimble moved the runners into scoring position with a perfect sacrifice bunt.  Junior center fielder Jordan Smith then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, with Knapp cruising home with the tying run to make it 6-6.

In the bottom of the 11th, Trimble led off with a single through the left side and stole second.  Jordan Smith was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  With one out, Quinn-Irons sent a fly ball to left that was dropped and the Patriots had the bases loaded.

Graduate student Ryan Archibald stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field, with Trimble stomping on the plate for the 7-6 walk-off victory.

For the Patriots, Shields allowed five runs on four hits and struck out seven with three walks in 4.1 innings.  Lamere gave up one run on two hits in 1.2 innings.  Kyle Smith allowed just one hit in 3.0 innings.  Mracna (2-1) pitched 2.0 hitless innings to earn his second win of the season.  

For the Bonnies, Breen allowed five runs on six hits in 6.0 innings.  Devine gave up one run on two hits in 2.0 innings.  O'Connell (1-1) surrendered an unearned run in the 11th and took the loss.

Wood went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored and Woody was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.  Jordan Smith, Trimble, Pracht and Archibald each drove in a run.

GAME TWO

Mason (19-19, 6-5 A10) fell behind St. Bonaventure (5-28, 2-9 A10) in the top of the first inning when Rankie hit a one-out, solo home run off of Patriots' sophomore starter Chad Gartland.

The Patriots took control of the game with 17 runs over five innings from the second through the sixth.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Woody and Knapp both singled and Wood drew a walk to load the bases against Bonnies sophomore starter Gabe Watts.
 
Freshman second baseman Evan Blanchard then doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and put the Patriots in front for good at 3-1.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Quinn-Irons walked and Woody singled to put runners on the corners.  Knapp knocked in a run with a sacrifice bunt and Woody followed with a RBI-single to make it 5-1.

The Patriots sent eight batters to the plate in the home half of the fourth and scored four runs on five hits to increase the advantage to 9-1.  Quinn-Irons and Woody each drove in a pair of runs with a single in the inning.

The Bonnies sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the fifth and scored four runs on two hits, a walk and two hit batters to cut the Mason lead to 9-5.

With a run in and the bases loaded, St. Bonaventure freshman right fielder Evan Dieter had the big hit when he drove in three runs with a double to the gap in left-center.

Mason freshman Logan Rumberg retired two batters in the inning in relief of Gartland.  Freshmen Tyler Herkey and Michael Salina, sophomore Britt Yount and Rumberg combined to toss 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots batted around and scored four more runs against Bonnies freshman reliever Noah Czajkowski. 

Blanchard doubled to right and Pracht singled to put runners on first and third.  The Patriots then executed the double-steal, with Blanchard crossing the pate to make it 10-5.  Trimble singled and Jordan Smith was hit by a pitch to put a Patriot at every base for Dykstra, who grounded into a fielder's choice to knock in Pracht from third for an 11-5
lead.  Quinn-Irons continued his big game when he drove in a run with a ground out and Woody then delivered a RBI-single to extend the advantage to 13-5.

Mason scored four runs in the sixth for the third straight inning against Bonnies junior Rushil Bhat.  With the bases loaded, Quinn-Irons drove in two runs with a single and Woody followed with a two-run double for the 17-5 final score.

For the Patriots, Gartland allowed five runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.  Rumberg (1-0) pitched 1.2 innings to earn his first collegiate win.  Herkey, Yount and Salina each pitched 1.0 scoreless inning.

For the Bonnies, Watts (2-5) allowed nine runs on 11 hits in 4.0 innings.  Czajkowski gave up four runs on five hits in 1.0 inning and Bhat surrendered four runs on two hits in 1.0 inning.

Woody went 5-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored, Quinn-Irons was 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored and Blanchard finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.

The Patriots and Bonnies wrap up the series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
