FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team is back on the road this weekend en route to the nation's capital to take on George Washington in this season's installment of the Revolutionary Rivalry.
In 20 all-time meetings between the Patriots and the Colonials, Mason holds a 15-5 advantage, including a 6-3 mark in Atlantic 10 contests. A season ago, the Patriots were victorious in Fairfax with a 14-10 win.
Last week, the Patriots went 1-1 against conference opponents with a road loss to (RV) Richmond and a 17-11 win over Duquesne at home. The Patriots have picked up both of this season's wins in Fairfax.
The Colonials snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday with a convincing 19-8 win over Delaware State in Washington, D.C. Overall, George Washington is 2-9 overall, with their first win coming against La Salle, 12-9, to open A-10 play.
PATRIOT POINTS
- Shannon Tuozzo leads the Patriots with 28 goals (4th, A-10) and 32 points. She is also first on the team with 38 draw controls, for 3.80 per game (6th, A-10)
- With her season-best four-goal performance on Saturday, junior Kate Elam became the fourth Patriot with double-digit goals on the season. She is fourth on the team with 10 goals and 12 points
- Junior Melanie Hutchinson has been a major contributor across the field, leading the Patriots in assists (5) and caused turnovers (10). She also matched her career-high of two goals on Saturday to bring her point total to nine on the season
- Defensively, junior Ciara Curtis leads Mason with 15 ground balls. Goalkeeper Meghan Deehan made 23 saves last week and ranks third in the A-10 with 8.80 saves/game
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
The Colonials are led on the offensive end of the field by graduate transfer Kerry McKeever, who has scored 28 goals on the season (4
th, A-10), almost double the next Colonial. She has also contributed significantly in the midfield and is second on the team with 27 draw controls with 12 ground balls, seven caused turnovers and three assists.
Whitney Moran is second on the team with 15 goals and 18 points while two other players lead GW with four assists each. Defensively, Stella Ray leads the Colonials with an incredible 48 ground balls (1
st, A-10) and 23 caused turnovers (3
rd, A-10). In net, Mia Caro has started and played in 10 games, averaging 8.9 saves per game (2
nd, A-10) with a .367 save percentage. Caro has also scooped up 14 ground balls.
