FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University rowing team will begin its 2023 spring season by hosting the annual George Cup at Sandy Run Regional Park.
The Patriots will compete against DMV foes George Washington and Georgetown as the Green & Gold begin their march to the A-10 Championship in May.
"It's always a tough racing when we have the opportunity to line up against GW and Georgetown," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "We are looking forward to the challenge."
Racing commences at 8:30 a.m. with the Varsity 8+ head-to-head matchup. The 2V8+/3V8+ begins at 8:50 a.m., followed by the Varsity 4+ at 9:10 a.m.
The 2V4+ race wraps up competition at 9:30 a.m.
In the Varsity 8+ event, the first place team earns nine points, the second receives six and the third gets three. The 2V8+ has a 6-4-2 breakdown, while the Varsity 4+ is at 3-2-1.
"Our team put in a lot of good work over the winter and the beginning of the spring," Richards said. "Now is our chance to get the payoff from that work. We had some good success last weekend in a scrimmage against Loyola. This race starts our racing season in earnest."
