FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 17 goals on Saturday en route to its' second conference win of the season over Duquesne, 17-11.
The Patriots (2-8, 2-2) were once again led by senior
Shannon Tuozzo who netted a game-high six points on five goals and an assist. She also added a game-high seven draw controls as well as two ground balls.
The Dukes (1-9, 0-4) scored the first goal of the game just a minute into the first quarter, but a three-goal response sparked by a
Melanie Hutchinson goal gave Mason a lead they would not give back up. Duquesne got within one goal on a player-up opportunity with 55 seconds remaining in the quarter, but Tuozzo netted her first of the afternoon with one second on the clock as Mason led 6-4 after the first.
Tuozzo completed her natural hat-trick by scoring the first two goals of the second quarter and
Kate Elam scored her second of the day to push the Patriots' lead to five with 8:35 remaining in the half. The Dukes scored the final two goals of the half in the final minute to trail 9-6 at the break.
Elam completed her first hat-trick as a Patriot less than two minutes into the third quarter to bring the lead back to five. After Duquesne scored the next two, Mason responded with two of their own to lead 13-8 with one quarter remaining.
Duquesne scored three of the next four goals to get back within three, 14-11, with 7:53 to go in the game, but the Mason defense would not allow another goal the rest of the way. Three different goal scorers netted tallies for the Patriots down the stretch to provide the final 17-11 tally.
