RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team fell to the Richmond Spiders on Wednesday night, 20-7.
The Patriots (1-8, 1-2) were led by senior
Chloe Reed, who scored a career-high four goals, all of which came in the first half of action.
Mason and Richmond held each other scoreless through the first six minutes of play, highlighted by three saves from senior
Meghan Deehan. The Spiders (8-2, 3-0) broke through first with 8:30 remaining in the first. Reed responded less than a minute later to tie the game, and again with 3:30 left to tie the game at two. The Spiders tacked on two free position goals in the final two minutes to take a 4-2 lead after the first.
Senior
Shannon Tuozzo scored the opening goal of the second quarter to pull within one, but Richmond was able to respond with three-straight to push the lead back to four. Junior
Kate Elam was able to stop the run with a free position goal, and Reed scored two straight to cut the lead back to two, but the Spiders scored with seven seconds remaining to lead 9-6 at the halftime break.
Freshman
Kate Anders scored the first goal of her young career at the 12:55 mark to bring the Patriots back within two, 9-7, but Richmond was able to finish the game on an 11-0 run to provide the final tally.
