Shannon Tuozzo had a career day leading the George Mason (1-7, 1-1) women's lacrosse team to a 13-11 win against La Salle (0-8, 0-2) in an afternoon tilt at George Mason Stadium today.
The Hauppauge, N.Y. native scored a Mason record nine goals, breaking Chachi Kelehan's record against VCU on April, 28, 2018. She added 11 draw controls, also a career-high, tied for fourth in Mason history.
La Salle jumped on the board with two quick goals before Mason tied it up, 2-2, with Tuozzo's first goal at 11:40 and
Kate Elam's first of two goals today, 40 seconds later. The Explorers added two more goals to take a 4-2 lead after the first period.
The Explorers would start the second period with three straight goals to take its biggest lead, 7-2, and again at 8-3.
Mason got hot on offense scoring four straight goals, three by Tuozzo and one by
Kate Elam. Tuozzo's fourth goal of the match came with just 16 second remaining in the second quarter. Elam scored 14 seconds later, to cut the Explorers lead, 8-7 at the half.
After two unanswered goals by La Salle to open the second half, Mason scored six straight goals to take its biggest lead, 13-10. Tuozzo had five goals in that stretch, including the one that put the Patriots up for the first time in the game, 11-10, with 10:48 remaining. The Patriots defense was locked in, not giving up another goal until less than one minute left in the match, a stretch that spanned 22 game clock minutes.
The Patriots out-shot the Explorers, 27-25.
Winning goalkeeper Meaghan Deegan had seven saves.
The Patriots will travel to Richmond on Wednesday to battle the Spiders at 7 p.m.
