Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason women's tennis team fell in its Atlantic 10 season-opener to George Washington in an morning match held at Van der Meer Tennis Center in Hilton Head, S.C. The Patriots were on the short end of two singles matches that finished in the tiebreaker set.
"We came out a little flat in the doubles but picked it back up in the singles." said Head Coach Steve Curtis. "This was a tough loss because we had our chances, losing two of the matches in the 3rd set breaker. It was a solid singles effort."
George Washington swept the doubles matches to earn the first point of the match.
Emily Wirt earned the lone point for the Patriots with a 6-2, 6-2, win against Sarah Bodewes at the No. 3 singles.
The Colonials earned the win with tiebreaker matches at the top two singles positions.
Top singles player
Paige La lost the first set against GW's Stella Wiesemann, 6-3, but the senior rebounded with a 6-2 win in the second to force the tiebreaker set.
At the No. 2 singles, GW's Gabriella Giraldo halted Mason's
Taylor Garcia three-match win streak with a tie-breker set win. Garcia drops to 5-2 in dual matches.
Lauren Splett and
Ashley Fitz-Patrick were leading in their matches at No. 5 and 6 singles before the match was won by the Colonials. Fitz-Patrick was in the tiebreaker set and Splett took the first set against GW's Lindsay Thompson.
Mason will take on Atlantic 10 member Saint Louis tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at the Hilton Beach and Tennis Club.
