Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason women's tennis team battled for close to five hours on the courts on Saturday before prevailing in the end, 4-3, against Delaware State. The Patriots improve to 2-0.
Mason won the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches to get on the board first.
The singles matches were very competitive with all six matches ending in the third set tiebreaker.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match without our No. 2
Taylor Garcia in the lineup," said Head Coach Steve Curtis. "The team came together, battled and overcame a very good Hornet team. I am very proud of our resilience."
Junior
Emily Wirt put the Patriots up 2-0 with a win against Daria Julia at No. 3 singles.
The match was tied at 2-2 after the Hornets won the matches at Nos. 2 and 4 singles.
At the top singles position, senior
Paige La defeated Delaware State's Kit Yi Kaye Au-Yeung to put Mason up 3-2. La won the tiebreaker set, 10-6.
Ashley Fitz-Patrick earned the decisive point. At No. 5 singles, the senior defeated Eva Golembiovski, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7.
The Patriots travel to Fredericksburg on Saturday for a match against Mary Washington at 11 am.
