Patriots to Host Elon in First-Ever Meeting

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team will welcome Elon to Fairfax for the first meeting in the programs' history.
 
The Patriots are still in the hunt for their first win of the season after dropping a non-conference road test to East Carolina on Saturday in Greenville. The Phoenix are coming off of an overtime loss to A-10 member VCU at home.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
·      Senior Shannon Tuozzo and freshman Kaitlyn Bestick scored for Mason against ECU and they lead the Patriots with five goals each this season. Tuozzo has also tallied three assists for a team-best eight points
·      Sophomore Lauren Distad has dished out a team-high four assists in 2023 to go along with one goal
·      Tuozzo and classmate Morgan Gunn have both won a team-best six draw controls, while senior Chloe Reed has won five
·      Despite putting opponents on the free position hashes 17 times, the Mason defense has allowed just four goals on free position attempts
·      Senior goalkeeper Meghan Deehan has played all 180 minutes in net for Mason this season, averaging just under 11 saves per game with a .444 save percentage. She has also scooped up two ground balls and has caused two turnovers
 
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
Despite being at 1-2 entering Wednesday's contest, both of Elon's losses have been one-goal games. It dropped its' season opener to Old Dominion, 12-11, and most recently fell to VCU in overtime, 9-8. The Phoenix's win came over Division I's newest member, Queens, 13-9.
 
Cierra Hopson and Anna Hackett lead Elon with eight goals each in 2023. Hopson has also dished out two assists for a team-high 10 points while Kaley Ehnow and Bridget Kelly have also tallied two assists for Elon. Hackett was most recently tabbed the CAA Rookie of the week after scoring seven goals in two games last week, as well as tallying four caused turnovers.
 
Sammy Fisher has been dominant on the draw circle, winning 19 draws so far this season to go along with six goals. Kailee Follette is second with nine draw control wins for the Phoenix.
 
Defensively, Mikaela Buoscio has caused a team-high eight turnovers and Jessie Penner has scooped up 10 ground balls in 2023. Chloe Herghelegiu has appeared in net in all three games so far this season, starting one. She has made nineteen saves while allowing 9.98 goals against with a .528 save percentage.

Mason will have just under a week off before returning to George Mason Stadium to host Campbell at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1.
