FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's tennis team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 6-1, tonight at the Burke Racquet and Swim Club to improve to 4-1 on the season.
"We played a very solid Mountaineer team tonight," said head coach Steve Curtis. "We overcame some adversity and remained focused to secure the win. I was very proud of our team tonight!"
Mason won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The point was gained after
Paige La and
Taylor Garcia edged the Mountaineers team of Amber Policar and Bella Pescatore, 7-5.
In singles action
Emily Wirt and
Taylor Garcia earned two-set decisions to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead. The fourth and match-winning point was earned in a tiebreaker set as the Patriots
Jackie Nannery defeated Pescatore, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.
The Mount earned its point in the top singles match. Victoria Papadopoulou defeated
Paige La, 6-2, 7-6(2).
Ashley Fitz-Patrick and
Lauren Splett earned points for the Patriots at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions. Fitz-Patrick improves to 4-1 this spring with the win.
The Patriots have now won 13 straight against Mount St. Mary's. Mount St. Mary's last defeated Mason, 6-3 on Mar. 22, 1994.
