FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team is on the hunt for their first win of 2023 this weekend when it travels to East Carolina to take on the Pirates on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Both teams are coming off of one-goal losses at home, with ECU falling to Navy and Mason stumbling against Longwood.
This is just the second all-time meeting between the Patriots and Pirates, with ECU leaving Fairfax victorious a season ago, 16-10.
PATRIOT POINTS
- Four different Patriots lead the team with four goals through the first two games, seniors Shannon Tuozzo and Morgan Gunn as well as freshman Kaitlyn Bestick
- Tuozz also leads the team in points, adding three assists, as well as five draw controls on the year
- Sophomore Lauren Distad is the team's leader in assists with four. She dished out a career-high three against Longwood on Wednesday
- Gunn has also won a team-high five draw controls as Mason has won the draw control battle in both games of the season
- Senior Meghan Deehan has plaed all 120 minutes for the Patriots this season, averaging 11.5 saves/game with a .469 save percentage
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
The Pirates are 1-1 to open the season, with a dominant win over Radford, 15-5, and a tight one-goal loss to Navy at home, 15-14. A season ago, East Carolina finished at an even 9-9 and 2-3 in the American Athletic Conference, ultimately falling in the semifinal round of the league playoffs to Florida.
12 different players have scored at least one goal for ECU in 2023, led by five apiece from Ellie Bromley and Leah Bestany. Pacing the offense is Frances Kimel, who has dished out five assists while scoring four goals of her own for a team-high nine points. Flynn Reed leads the Patriots with 13 draw control wins.
Defensively, Sydney Frank has scooped up a team-high nine groundballs while causing three turnovers. Brynn Knight has gotten the start in goal in both games, making 11 saves and posting a .367 save percentage.
