SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Inclement weather canceled Mason's first game of the day against University of Maryland Eastern Shore, leaving the Patriots only facing off against the tournament host this afternoon. The George Mason softball team (2-2) lost to USC Upstate (4-0) 7-0 in the afternoon game.
The Spartans jumped to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Peyton Darnell hit a leadoff homerun. Upstate would hit another solo shot the following inning, this time by Tiffany Domingue.
The Patriots threatened to score in the top of the fourth inning down only 2-0. After
Alena Ball singled to center,
Maddy Myers drew a walk and
Elyssa DeRosa singled to right field, loading the bases with two outs. Unfortunately for the Green & Gold, they were unable to convert, stranding all three runners. The Patriots in total stranded five runners on base in the game.
The Spartans extended their lead in the fifth inning. A string of singles drove in four more insurance runs. One final run was scored in the sixth.
