Fairfax, Va. -- The George Mason women's tennis team is off to a 3-0 start to the spring championship season. The Patriots defeated Mary Washington, 6-1, in Fredericksburg Saturday afternoon.
The score in doubles was tied at 1-1, when the Patriots duo of
Jackie Nannery and
Lauren Splett secured the doubles point with an 8-7(4) tie-breaker set win. Mason's
Emily Wirt and
Jenin Alasadi won their doubles match at the No. 2 slot after UMW's team defeated
Paige La and
Taylor Garcia at No. 1 doubles.
The Patriots would win four straight singles points against the No. 12 DIII ranked Eagles. Nannery defeated Beckner, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to go up 2-0. In the top sinlges spot La won 6-4, 6-2 to improve to 7-4 on the season. Sophomore
Lauren Splett defeated Mary Washington's Smith, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to earn the match-winning point. Grad student
Taylor Garcia and
Ashley Fitz-Patrick needed tiebreaker sets, but each won their match.
The Patriots travel to Navy to take on the Mids in Annapolis on Sunday at 10 am.
