BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The George Mason softball team (2-1) finished their first weekend of regular season play on an abbreviated schedule, as inclement weather interrupted the Runnin' Bulldog Classic. The Patriots walked off Robert Morris in their Saturday morning game by the score of 2-1, sweeping the season series against the Colonials.
The final two games Mason was scheduled to play this weekend were against Austin Peay later this evening and host Gardner-Webb the following afternoon. The continued rain and drop in temperature prompted tournament organizers to cancel the rest of the weekend's schedule.
Mason (2-1) vs. Robert Morris (1-2)
In Saturday morning's game, the Patriots faced off against the Colonials for a second consecutive game. Leading off the bottom of the second inning, Nicole Bechtel doubled to left field and would later advance to third on a Patriot groundout. Later in the inning, Madi Williams drove in the game's first run after she singled to right field, sending Bechtel home.
The Colonials of Robert Morris quickly responded the following inning. Faith Miller lifted a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed the runner on third base, Logan Black, to tag up and level the game 1-1.
Both teams were threatening to score throughout the game but were unable to convert. The score was knotted at one a piece until the bottom of the seventh inning.
With one out in the inning, rookie Alena Ball singled through the left side. The following at bat, Haley Taormina ripped a triple down the right field line which sent Ball home. This was Mason's first walk off win of the season.
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Tallman was awarded the win, her first of the season. This was also Tallman's first win as a Patriot.
