FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The George Mason University rowing team ended its fall season on a high note during the annual Head of the Occoquan regatta on Saturday afternoon at Sandy Run Regional Park.
Led by strong performances from the team's Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ crews, Mason put together a productive day of racing. Mason will now take a competitive break over the winter months and train for the spring season beginning in March.
"This was a good day for our team," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "The effort was good across the board. It was a nice note to end our fall season on and I'm looking forward to heading indoors and transitioning to the next phase of our season. We put together a good foundation for the fall and now we're ready to buckle down and prepare for the spring when the racing truly matters."
Mason's Varsity 8+ finished sixth in a 12-team race, ahead of crews from Pittsburgh, Penn State and Robert Morris, among others. The Patriots crossed the finish line in 19:18.15.
The Varsity 4+ put together an outstanding performance, placing eighth out of 20 crews in a time of 22:28.60. That included triumphs over boats representing Loyola (Md.), Pittsburgh, Robert Morris and American.
The Second Varsity 8+ placed sixth in its race in a time of 20:41.80, while the Novice 8+ made its debut for the Green & Gold and placed 12
th in 27:45.86.
Mason's Novice 4+ also raced for the first time and put together a time of 25:30.03 to place sixth in its 8-team event. That included an individual victory over Pittsburgh.
