Fairfax, Va. – The first week of October is National Mental Illness Awareness Week. Mason Athletics strongly supports the mental health of all of our Division 1 student-athletes, and our department strives to promote mental health education, support services, and awareness to break the stigma.
"I am honored to serve our incredible Mason student-athletes and am excited about the work Mason is doing in supporting the multidimensional diverse identities of each student-athlete, both on and off the field/court," stated Dr. Derek Vigon, Coordinator of Sport Psychology for Mason Athletics stated. "We continue to identify creative ways to educate and break down the stigma around seeking mental health support. It is okay to not be okay."
Mason athletics is proud to partner with Hilinski's Hope for the 2023 Student Athlete Mental Health Week. Hilinski's Hope Foundation was started as a non-profit organization formed to promote awareness and education of mental health and wellness for student-athletes. Their vision is to help universities save lives, eliminate stigma, and scale mental wellness programs for student-athletes.
George Mason women's soccer hosted Mason Athletics' annual Morgan's Message Dedication Game to raise awareness of student athletes and the importance of mental health within the athletics community. Wristbands were worn by players and staff, while stickers and ribbons were handed out to fans at the entrance of the stadium.
