FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason Wrestling program honored its inaugural hall of fame class Sunday afternoon with more than 250 in attendance at the Stacy Sherwood Community Center in Fairfax.

"It's a tremendous honor to celebrate the rich history and remarkable individuals who have contributed to the sport of wrestling at George Mason University," said Head Coach Frank Beasley. "The Hall of Fame is not merely about recognizing the achievements of individuals; it is a journey through time, a collection of stories that tell the tale of unwavering commitment. Our inductees have faced countless challenges and, through their hard work and dedication, have brought honor and glory to our University. Their legacy extends beyond the mat, enriching our community and inspiring future generations. Today, we celebrated their devotion and passion, and we paid tribute to a tradition of excellence."

The 2023 class featured a distinguished lineup of inductees comprising All-Americans state and National Wrestling Hall of Fame members, wrestling legends, veterans, distinguished coaches, and the rich history of George Mason that dates back more than 50 years to the 1972-1973 season. Patriots legends included in the 10-member class were Scott Curtis '93, Matt Finacchio '95, Scott Kirsch '91, Paul Maltagliati '83, Sean Shea '01, Dan Wotring '81, and Bryan Hazard. Two former head coaches Roger Rinker and Mike Moyer were recognized, as well as the 1973-74 team led by head coach Jerry Mullins.

"The celebration was about honoring our inductees, those that have laid the foundation for which we build on," said Director of Athletics Marvin Lewis. "We appreciate the inductees commitment, dedication, and contributions, not just to the wrestling program, but to our athletic department and our university. Each honoree is an inspiration, especially to all the Mason wrestlers, showing our student-athletes what is possible, and showing them that with dedication and commitment so much is possible. Congratulations to all the honorees."

The George Mason University Wrestling Hall of Fame was established to recognize and honor outstanding achievement in wrestling, contributions to Mason athletics, and significant service to society. Contributions through coaching, refereeing, sponsorships, media, announcing, and lifetime support also qualify individuals for induction. This first Hall of Fame class represents people that have enjoyed success at all levels of their career.  In addition, they have positively impacted both society and industry.  These inductees have made a significant and lasting mark on George Mason University Wrestling.
