PHILADELPHIA –
The George Mason University rowing team gauged its progress through the fall season with a beneficial day of racing at the Navy Day Regatta on Sunday.

Mason raced three four boats and two eights in the annual day of headracing on the Schuykill River.

"It was a productive day for us," head coach Joseph Richards said. "Everyone came off the water knowing what we want to work on moving forward over the three weeks we have remaining on the Occoquan this fall."

Mason's 'A' Varsity 4+ boat put together a strong race Sunday, placing 12th out of the 36 competing crews in a time of 16:16.45. That put the Patriots ahead of boats from Temple, Penn, Drexel and a host of other programs.

Mason's additional fours placed 33rd in a time of 17:50.90 and 34th in 17:54.29.

In 8+ racing, Mason's 'A' boat placed 19th out of 26 crews in a time of 15:18.90, ahead of crews from Lafayette, Monmouth and La Salle. The 'B' boat finished 26th in 17:24.26.

"It was a quintessential head racing day – there was a lot of tight racing and boats trading leads with other crews while coxswains fought with other coxswains to get the best line," Richards added. "It was a lot of fun to see the racing and hear the team talking about it when they came off the water."

The Patriots now split up for a pair of races on Saturday (Oct. 21). One group heads to the famed Head of the Charles in Boston, while the other heads west for the Yinzer Cup in Pittsburgh.
