Fairfax, Va. -- The women's tennis team participated in its first tournament of the season at the Bill and Mary Moore Invitational in Annapolis this weekend.
 
Newcomer Taylor Garcia finished 2-2 overall in her first matches in a Mason uniform. Playing in the top flight, the grad transfer defeated Abigail Moghatader, 6-3, 6-3, before dropping the next match, 6-3, 6-4, to Amelia Haley. Paired with senior Paige La, the duo finished 1-1 in flight A doubles action.
 
Freshman Maitree Root began her collegiate career with a 2-1 record in singles actions. Playing in flight B singles, Root, a native of India, defeated Alison Bader and Anastasia Gubanova before dropping her semifinal match in a tie-breaker set against Natalia Aruj.
 
Senior Ashley Fitz-Patrick, and juniors Emily Wirt and Jenin Alasadi each won their opening match before bowing out in the following matches.
 
The Patriots will next hit the courts at the Bedford Cup hosted by the University of Maryland, Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.
