SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The George Mason softball team (24-26, 12-12 A-10) took the series sweep in a 3-0 shutout win against Saint Louis (21-27, 13-10 A-10) on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, the Patriots were able to strike in the top of the second inning to take the 2-0 lead.
Junior
Maddy Myers was the second batter in the inning and found herself a spot on base from a single to the left side. Redshirt sophomore
Nicole Bechtel advanced Myers over to second on a misread fielder's choice play. With runners on first and third from a fielder's choice play that landed senior
Amber Verstynen on base, Verstynen stole second before she was sent home with Myers on a two RBI single to center field from sophomore
Marlaina Bozek.
Similar to the second game played the day prior, the Patriots were unable to string offensive plays together until late in the game.
Mason was able to add their third and final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore
Sydney Bales led off the inning for the Patriots with a single to right center before she put herself in scoring position after stealing second base. Another single from Bechtel was able to send Bales home.
Defense proved vital in today's game as the Patriots were able to limit the Billikens to four hits and forced Saint Louis out in four batters or less in their respective innings.
