Box Score 2 SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The George Mason softball team (23-26, 11-12 A-10) took two wins from Saint Louis (21-26, 13-9 A-10) on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots took the win in the first game of the day 6-5 before earning the 3-2 win in game two.
Game 1: Mason (22-26, 10-12 A-10) vs. Saint Louis (21-25, 13-8 A-10)
Mason started the game off strong by scoring their first run of the game in the first inning. Sophomore
Marlaina Bozek was walked in her leadoff spot for the Patriots. Senior
Taylor Dadig, who was up second, hit a single to right center to put runners on the corners before she stole second. Junior
Haley Taormina reached base on a fielders choice play, keeping runners on the corners for Mason. Dadig eventually stole home to score the run for the Patriots.
Saint Louis tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third in on an RBI single up the middle sending the previous runner on base home.
The Patriots were able to take the 4-1 advantage in the top of the fifth inning. Bozek led off the inning with a single to left field. Dadig reached base on a fielders choice play and Bozek was able to stay safe on the throw to second. Senior
EJ Bankson slammed the ball out in center field for a three-run home run for Mason.
The Billikens rallied back in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring a two-run home run to cut their deficit to one.
Mason scored their final two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Redshirt sophomore
Nicole Bechtel hit a single to center field before senior
Amber Verstynen followed that single with one of her own. Bozek was walked to load the bases for the Green & Gold. Dadig was able to advance on a fielder's choice play, keeping the bases loaded for the Patriots. Bankson's single up the middle allowed two runs to score, notching a career high five RBI's from the senior first baseman.
A late rally from Saint Louis in the bottom of the seventh inning was not enough as they only scored two runs, falling to Mason 6-5 in the series opener.
Graduate student
Cheyenne Van Pelt earned the start and the win in the first game. Van Pelt pitched 6.1 innings before she was relieved by freshman
Jordan Anderson who earned the save in the game.
Game 2: Mason (23-26, 10-12 A-10) vs. Saint Louis (21-26, 13-9 A-10)
Saint Louis was able to get on the board first in the second game with their two runs coming in the first two innings. The Billikens scored one run in the bottom of the first inning off an RBI single and their second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on the same play.
Offensive momentum for the Patriots was not in motion for the first six innings of the game as they were not able to string along plays to help put them on the board.
In a last chance effort for Mason, they were able to avoid the shutout by putting one run on the board before taking the 3-2 lead. Junior
Rachel Warrens led off the inning, hitting one off the fence to record a triple. With Warrens in scoring position, Bechtel hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to score the first run of the inning.
With two out, Verstynen hit a single to center field to put herself on base. With the second single to center field in a row, Bozek put runners on the corners for the Patriots. The sophomore second baseman put herself in scoring position when she stole second base. Dadig, with the play of the game, hit a single up the middle to score the final two runs for Mason.
Sophomore
Carly Cooper earned the start and the win in the game. Cooper pitched her seventh complete game of the season, improving her record to 9-9.
