PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The George Mason baseball team rallied from seven runs down to tie the game, but fell in 11 innings to Saint Joseph's, 10-9, on Friday at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Mason (9-19, 1-3 A-10) fell behind Saint Joseph's (15-12, 2-2 A-10) when the Hawks scored a run in the first inning against senior starter
Jared Lyons.
Sophomore left fielder Brett Callahan led off with a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a fly out. With one out, senior third baseman Nate Thomas singled to right field, with Callahan scoring to put the Hawks in front, 1-0.
Mason has allowed the first run in each of its last seven games.
The Patriots responded in the top of the second against Hawks graduate student starter Ian McCole.
Freshman
Brett Ahalt led off with a walk and classmate
Connor Dykstra was hit by a pitch. Senior first baseman
Scott Morgan followed with a single, and Ahalt scored on an error by the left fielder to tie the score, 1-1.
Graduate student designated hitter
Kamron Smith dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move two runners into scoring position. Senior third baseman
Daniel Brooks then drove in Dykstra with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 game.
In the home half of the second, Saint Joseph's sent nine batters to the plate and scored six runs on three hits and three walks to regain the lead.
With one out, the Hawks loaded the bases with a single and two walks before Callahan forced in a run with a free pass to even the score, 2-2.
Hawks graduate student right fielder Jake Artz then singled in a pair of runs to give Saint Joseph's the advantage, 4-2.
The Patriots summoned sophomore
Ryan Peterson from the bullpen. Thomas drove in a run with a fielder's choice to increase the lead to 5-2
Senior catcher Andrew Cossetti tripled to the left field corner, with Thomas racing all the way around from first, and Cossetti never stopped and scored on a throwing error to make the score 7-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Callahan hit a two-run home run to pad the lead to 9-2.
The Patriots went on to score seven unanswered runs, while Mason relievers kept the Hawks off the board for six straight innings.
Kamron Smith led off the bottom of the fifth with a double, and with two outs, he scored on a single by Stallings to make it 9-3.
Stallings have 15 RBI in his last 11 games.
After an infield single by freshman
Carsen Pracht, sophomore center fielder
Jordan Smith belted his first home run of the season, a two-run blast over the left field fence to pull the Patriots closer at 9-6.
The Patriots have hit at least one home run in each of their last four games.
With two outs in the top of the sixth,
Kamron Smith singled to left field and Brooks followed with a double down the right field line to plate a run. Freshman
Alex Knapp kept the rally going with a walk, and Stallings drove in Brooks with a single against Hawks graduate student reliever Ryan DeVine to make it a one-run game, 9-8.
In the top pf the seventh, Ahalt doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan to tie the score, 9-9.
The Hawks threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but senior
Mason Posey struck out a pair of batters to escape a bases-loaded jam.

Chad Gartland took over on the mound for the 10th inning and retired the side in order.
With one out in the top of the 11th, Pracht doubled and
Jordan Smith singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Ahalt lined out to second, and Pracht was thrown out at the plate to keep the game tied.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, graduate student center fielder Brendan Hueth and sophomore first baseman Paul Kokol both singled to put runners on first and second. Graduate student second baseman Liam Bendo then drove in the winning run with a single to right for the 10-9 walk-off victory for the Hawks.
For the Patriots, Lyons allowed six runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Peterson gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Posey tossed 1.2 scoreless innings. Gartland (1-1) allowed one run on four hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss.
For the Hawks, McCole allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits in 5.2 innings. Devine surrendered just one run on two hits in 2.1 inings. McShane (4-0) pitched 3.0 scoreless frames to earn the win.
Stallings went 3-for-6 with two RBI and scored a run. Pracht was 3-for-6 with a run scored.
Jordan Smith finished 2-for-5 with a three-run home run.
Kamron Smith and Ahalt each scored two runs in the game.
The top three in the order for the Patriots combined to go 8-for-17 with five RBI and three runs scored. Every player in the starting lineup for both teams reached base at least once in the game.
The Patriots and Hawks play the middle game of the series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Smithson Field.
