RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team (6-4, 0-1) dropped its Atlantic 10 opener at Richmond (9-8, 2-1) by the score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon in RVA.
The Patriots were within just a few points of potentially flipping the match vs. the Spiders but could not quite get over the hump.
Mason's victories came from a
Faisal Alrebdi triumph at No. 5 singles, as well as a win for
Herman Jentoft at No. 6. Jentoft won his first set over Alaister Burke (6-4), then dropped his second, 6-3. But Jentoft rallied to take the third 7-5 and pick up the singles win.
At No. 1 singles,
Rishab Sardana won his first set, 6-4. After falling, 6-2, in the second, he fought back in the third but ultimately was edged by Daniel Kliebhan, 7-5.
At No. 3,
Momin Khan also had a chance for the win, but the match was called after the clinching point for the Spiders. Khan won his first set, 6-3, fell in the second, 6-2, and was at 6-6 all in the third when the overall match ended.
The Spiders won the doubles point, but Mason claimed victory at No. 2 doubles, where
Ryan Charles and
Rithik Sardana won 6-3 over Campbell Erwin and John Walsh. The duo is now 5-2 in dual doubles this season.
Mason is right back in action Monday (April 4) when the Patriots battle Longwood in Fairfax. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
