FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team will host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Apr. 27 for a midweek doubleheader.
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
Mason is coming off their weekend conference series with Fordham, falling short in all three games despite strong hitting performances.
In game one of the weekend, one Patriot went 1-for-2 at the plate while three other Patriots went 1-for-3 at the plate in the 2-0 loss. Sophomore
Marlaina Bozek was able to tally a hit on the day in her 1-for-2 plate appearance and was walked once. These three players were senior
Amber Verstynen, junior
Haley Taormina, and sophomore
Sydney Bales.
In the second game of the weekend, Bozek, Bales, and Taormina were able to lead the offensive momentum for Mason. Bales added a run scored and Taormina added a run scored and an RBI. Senior
EJ Bankson went 1-for-3 at the plate and notched an RBI.
Mason had a better offensive showing in the third game of the weekend. Taormina led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and recording two RBI's. Verstynen went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored one of the runs for the Patriots. Bozek and senior
Taylor Dadig went 1-for-4 at the plate, tallying a run scored and an RBI respectively
Graduate student
Cheyenne Van Pelt earned the start and the loss in the first game, pitching her fifth complete game of the season. Sophomore
Carly Cooper earned her 17
th start of the season in the second game before recording the loss in her sixth complete game of the season. Van Pelt earned the start in the third game of the weekend and pitched three innings before Cooper relieved her to pitch 1.1 innings.
Jordan Anderson earned the loss in the third game, coming in to relieve Cooper to throw the remaining 4.2 innings.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
UMES, 2022 record: 15-29, 11-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
UMES ended their 2020 season with an overall record of 3-18, before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hawks did not compete in a 2021 season as the school and athletic department felt heavy effects from the pandemic.
UMES is led by sophomore Tatum Kresley. Kresley currently leads the team in batting average, recording a 0.450 mark so far this season. The outfielder has tallied 68 hits, one double, four triples, and 19 RBI's in 151 at-bats.
From the bullpen, the Hawks are led by graduate student Nasya Goodman, who has appeared in 31 games thus far in the 2022 season, tallying a record of 7-12. Goodman has tallied an ERA of 4.16 after 109.1 innings pitched, giving up 131 hits, 94 runs, 38 walks, 13 doubles, two triples, and six home runs.
Mason holds the advantage over UMES, leading the all-time series 3-1, with the last meeting between the two teams occurring in the 2016 season. All four games between the two teams have occurred in Fairfax.
