FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team fell in its final match of the regular season Sunday morning during a 4-0 setback to visiting Duquesne.
In doubles, Mason picked up a victory at No. 3, as junior
Rithik Sardana and senior
Erick Rivas upended Duquesne's Marshall/Teberikov duo, 6-4. Mason's pair held serve throughout the match en route to a victory.
In singles, Sardana played a gritty match against Alex Mascioli at No. 2. He won his first set, 6-3, then lost in the second, 1-6. The two players battled to 6-6 in the third and the tiebreak came down to the wire. But Mascioli was able to hold on to win it, 9-7, and take the match.
At No. 3, junior
Momin Khan also battled to 6-6 in his first set, but fell 9-7 in the tiebreak. He dropped his second set, 6-2.
Senior
Rishab Sardana played a close match at No. 1, but Kaipo Marshall was able to hold on for Duquesne, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Elsewhere, junior
Faisal Alrebdi lost his first set, 2-6, but fought back to win the second, 6-2. He trailed 5-4 in the third set when the match was called.
Mason now will await its seed for the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship. Depending on seed, the Patriots will open competition either on Thursday, April 28 or Friday, April 29. The tournament will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
