Fairfax, Va. -- In its final regular season match, the George Mason (13-7) women's tennis team was bested by Duquesne (11-8) in an Atlantic 10 battle, 4-3.
The match lasted more than five hours on a hot spring day in Virginia. "We lost a tough one to Duquesne today," said Head Coach Steve Curtis. "Battling the Dukes and the hot weather like this will help get us prepared for the Atlantic 10 Championships in Orlando this week."
The Patriots got on the board first winning the top two doubles matches. Mason's top team of
Grace Hashiguchi and
Jackie Nannery won their tenth match of the season with a 7-5 victory against the Dukes Meredith Lee and Priyanka Mitta. The team of
Paige La and
Hannah Yang cruised to a 6-1 win at the No. 2 slot and finished the regular season with a 15-6 mark.
Mason increased its lead with a 6-0, 6-3 win by
Paige La at the top singles position.
The Dukes tie the match, 2-2, after wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Mason regained the lead after a competitive match at the No. 2 singles between Hashiguchi and the Dukes Daniela Latoni. The players split the first two sets, each winning by a 7-5 margin. In the tie-breaker set, Hashiguchi won 7-5. The grad student finished the regular season with 14-9 record, including 9-5 in dual action from the No. 2 slot.
Duquesne won the match after winning the final two singles points. Savannah Crowell drop the No. 6 singles match, but finished the season with a 17-11 singles record, including a 7-1 mark from the sixth slot.
The Patriots travel to Orlando for the Atlantic 10 Championships, April 27-30.
