FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team (17-22, 6-9 A-10) dropped both games of their doubleheader with Longwood (23-20) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lancers took the win in the first game of the day 11-2 in five innings before coming away with the 8-5 win in game two.
Game 1: Longwood (22-20) vs. Mason (17-21)
Both teams started the game strong scoring one run a piece.
Longwood puts a runner on base with a single down the left field line. To follow up the single, the Lancers hit a triple to center field to score the runner on base.
Senior
Taylor Dadig, the leadoff hitter for Mason, earned her trip to first base after being hit by a pitch. Senior
EJ Bankson then hit a single up the middle to put herself on base and advance Dadig over to second. Sophomore
Marlaina Bozek then made her trip to first base on an error by the shortstop. With the bases loaded, junior
Haley Taormina hits an RBI groundout that sends Dadig home to score the run for Mason.
Longwood added another run to their column in the top of the second inning. The Lancers hit a single to left field and a double down the left field line to but runners on base. Longwood scored on the next play on a sacrifice fly out to right field.
The Lancers add one more run off a fielder's choice RBI in the top of the third inning to take the 3-1 advantage.
The fourth inning added seven more runs to Longwood's total. The runs were scored on two RBI singles, a 2 RBI double, and a three-run homer sent out at center field. Longwood then led in the game 10-1.
Mason was able to score one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior
Rachel Warrens singled to left field to put herself on base. With two outs in the inning, junior
Maddy Myers was hit by a pitch, putting her on base and advancing Warrens over to second. A single to right field from sophomore
Sydney Bales is hit far enough to send Warrens home.
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Longwood hits a solo home run out to left center to take the 11-2 advantage and win in the game.
Sophomore
Carly Cooper earned the start and the loss in the first game. Despite being relieved by freshman
Alexandra Anderson in the fourth inning, Cooper was entered back into the game and pitched her sixth complete game of the season.
Game 2: Longwood (23-20) vs. Mason (17-22)
After a strong offensive performance in the first game by Longwood, the Lancers scored four of their eight runs of the game in just the first inning. After walking the second batter in the lineup, the Lancers hit a two-run home run out to center field. The next three batters for Longwood hit singles to put themselves on base. The seventh batter in the order for the Lancers hit a single to center field to score two runs before called out at first base.
Mason tried to start an offensive rally in the bottom of the first inning off a single to left center from Dadig. Bozek and Taormina were both walked. With the bases loaded, the Patriots stranded all three runners on base.
The Patriots were able to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to one. Bales was walked before freshman
Hayley Shifflett hit a double to right field to put runners in scoring position. Sophomore
Zoe Vozick was walked to load the bases.
Warrens hit a single to right field to score two of the runners. Dadig followed that up with a single of her own, this one out to center field. Mason loads the bases again and scored their final run of the inning on a hit by pitch.
Action remained fairly calm until the top of the sixth inning when Longwood added their other four runs of the game. The second batter in the order hit a triple down the left field line before scoring on a wild pitch. The next two batters were walked and then sent home off an RBI single up the middle. The Lancers add another run off an error by the catcher and then score their final run off an RBI single to left field.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Patriots score two more runs. Taormina led off the inning for Mason and hit a double to left center. Freshman
Charlotte Montgomery was up next and hit a single to the shortstop. Freshman
Madi Williams followed that up with a single to the pitcher to load the bases. Bales was walked and in turn scored a run for the Patriots before advancing another runner home on a wild pitch.
A late two run rally from Mason was not enough as Longwood took the 8-5 win in the game.
Freshman
Jordan Anderson earned her third start of the season before recording her first loss. Anderson pitched for four innings before she was relieved by Williams who pitched the remaining three.

The Patriots will host Fordham for a conference weekend series Apr. 23-24 with first pitch on Saturday slated for 3 p.m.
