FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team will head across the Potomac for a weekend series against George Washington on Apr. 15-16, competing in the old Revolutionary Rivalry.
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
Mason is coming off a midweek win against Towson, 6-4, in a strong offensive game for the Patriots.
Five Patriots comprised several strong offensive performances on Wednesday. Redshirt sophomore
Nicole Bechtel led the way, going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Senior
EJ Bankson went 2-for-3 at the plate and was walked in another plate appearance. Junior
Haley Taormina went 2-for-3 at the plate, hitting her third home run of the season and scored two runs. Junior
Rachel Warrens also went 2-for-3 at the plate, tallying two runs and two of her hits were doubles. Sophomore
Sydney Bales went 2-for-3 at the plate, earning her first home run of the season. In seven innings, Mason was able to record six doubles.
Freshman
Jordan Anderson earned her first start and the win in the game. Anderson pitched for five innings, only giving up one run and five hits, before being relieved by freshman
Madi Williams. Williams threw for two innings and allowed three hits and three runs.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
George Washington, 2022 record: 21-11, 11-1 Atlantic 10
George Washington ended their 2021 season with an overall record of 37-11, 23-1 in the conference. The Colonials, who garnered the Atlantic 10 Championship title, ended their season in the NCAA regionals with loses to Louisiana and McNeese State.
George Washington is led by sophomore Alexa Williams. Williams currently leads the team in batting average, recording a 0.368 mark so far this season. The utility player has tallied 35 hits, eight doubles, six home runs, and 31 RBI's in 95 at-bats.
From the bullpen, the Colonials are led by graduate student Sierra Lange, who has appeared in 23 games thus far in the 2022 season, tallying a record of 16-6. Lange has tallied an ERA of 2.69 after 130.1 innings pitched, giving up 119 hits, 52 runs, 36 walks, 25 doubles, five triples, and 15 home runs. Most recently, Lange pitched three straight complete games in the series against Dayton.
George Washington holds the advantage over Mason, leading the all-time series 11-20, with the last meeting between the two teams occurring in the 2021 season. The Patriots and the Colonials faced each other eight times during the 2021 due to COVID.
