TOWSON, Md. - The George Mason softball team (16-18, 5-7 A-10) picked up a 6-4 win in a midweek matchup at Towson (12-23) on Wednesday afternoon.
Mason started the game off strong with a double from senior
EJ Bankson and a single from sophomore
Marlaina Bozek. With two runners on base, the Patriots were unable to bring home a run.
Despite Mason's offensive prowess, Towson struck first in the bottom of the first inning to score the first run of the game. A triple from the Tigers was able to score the run.
Both teams played a strong defensive game in the second and third innings, getting each other out in four batters or less.
Mason turned it on in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three runs to take the 3-1 advantage. Junior
Haley Taormina hit a double out to right field to lead off the inning. After stealing third, Taormina was able to score on a sacrifice fly out to centerfield from junior
Rachel Warrens.
Redshirt sophomore
Nicole Bechtel followed that up with a double down the left field line to put a runner on base for Mason. After a strikeout from the Patriots, sophomore
Sydney Bales comes up to the plate to hit a two-run home run out to right center.
Towson tried to start on offensive rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases off three consecutive singles. Two out to right field and the other was a bunt. With two outs in the inning, the final batter flied out to left field.
Mason was able to put one more on the board in the top of the sixth inning to take the 4-1 advantage. Warrens hit a double out to left center before freshman
Jordan Anderson hit a double to right center to score Warrens.
The Patriots finished their time on the offensive end strong, scoring two more runs in the top of the sixth to lead 6-1 over the Tigers. With two outs already, Taormina comes up to the plate, slamming one out of left field for her third home run of the season.
Continuing the inning, Warrens hit her second double of the game. Bechtel was able to bring her home off her single out to right field.
In an attempt to come back, Towson put two runners on base off back-to-back singles. Mason was able to get the lead runner out on a fielder's choice over at third base before the Tigers hit a three-run home run out to center field. The Patriots were able to end the game on a strikeout.
Freshman
Jordan Anderson earned her first start and the win in the game. Anderson pitched for five innings, only giving up one run and five hits, before being relieved by freshman
Madi Williams. Williams threw for two innings and allowed three hits and three runs.
