FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team (15-18, 5-7 A-10) picked up a 2-1 win in their final game of the series with Massachusetts (12-22, 5-6 A-10) on Monday.
Mason was able to rally offensive momentum early in the game in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
Taylor Dadig, the leadoff batter for the Patriots, got the inning started with a single to the right side. Sophomore
Marlaina Bozek was walked to put two runners on base for Mason before they were stranded by the following three batters in the order.
Both teams in the hit a double deep into the outfield to rally offensive momentum for their teams but were unsuccessful in their attempts.
In the bottom of the third inning, in the leadoff spot again, Dadig hit a single up the middle to put herself on base before advancing to second on a stolen base and then over to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Senior
EJ Bankson then reached on a fielder's choice to then advance Dadig home to give Mason the 1-0 advantage.
In an attempt to come back, UMass earned their first and only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. The leadoff batter of the inning for the Minutewomen reached base on an error and then scored off a sacrifice fly out to left field.
Graduate student
Cheyenne Van Pelt earned the start and the win in the game, improving her record to 5-7. In her third complete game of the season, Van Pelt threw two strikeouts while only allowing three hits, one run, and one batter walked.

The Patriots will trek up I-95 to face Towson for a midweek game on Apr. 13 with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
