Davidson, N.C. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team fell to host Davidson, 19-8, today at Richardson Field.
A top three scoring offense in the Atlantic 10 Conference, Davidson used an extended 11-1 run across halves to go up 16-5 heading into the final period. The Patriots outscored the Wildcats in the fourth but could not move closer than nine for the remainder of the match.
Mason falls to 1-8 overall, 0-2 to open conference play. Davidson improves to 8-1, 2-0 in the A-10.
Grad student
Ioanna Mantzouratos led the Patriots with a season-high five points (3/2), including her second hat trick of the season.
Phoebe Nelson and
Olivia O'Brien added two goals each. Mantzouratos added a team-high five draw controls.
Down 4-1 after the first period, the Patriots stormed back with three of the first four goals of the second period to climb to within one goal, 5-4. Two of the goals recorded were by Mantzourantos, her 14th/15th of the season. The other goal by
Lauren Distad was scored on a free run down the left alley.
Davidson rattled off the final six goals of the second period to take an 11-4 advantage into the break.
Starting goalkeeper
Meghan Deehan had six saves in the first half on 17 Davidson shots on goal. She was replaced by
Fiona Rickels to open the third period. Rickels ended with two saves on nine Wildcats shots.
The Patriots opened the second half with an
Olivia O'Brien goal, a rocket passed goalie Monahan. It would be the only goal for Mason in the period.
Davidson outshot the Patriots 34-22, including 26-16 on goal.
The Patriots set to host its first A-10 match against St. Bonaventure on Friday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
