FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team (12-12, 3-3 A-10) dropped their first two contests of the three-game series to Siena.
The Patriots fought hard in a 7-6 loss in 10 innings in the first game of the day before dropping the second game 4-1.
Game 1: Siena (8-10) vs. Mason (12-11)
In game one, the action started in the bottom of the first inning when Mason was able to get on the board.
The Patriots were able to put themselves in scoring position after junior
Rachel Warrens doubled down the left field line. Senior
Taylor Dadig then hit an RBI single up the middle to bring Warrens home, giving the Patriots the 1-0 advantage.
Siena got on the board in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs of a single hit deep into right field and then on a sacrifice fly hit out to the same spot. This gave the Saints the 2-1 advantage over the Patriots.
Mason was able to tie the game in the bottom of the third game off an RBI double from sophomore
Marlaina Bozek which advanced one of Mason's two base runner's home.
The Saints added one more to their column in the top of the fourth inning as the base runner for Siena was able to advance home on a passed ball.
The Patriots stormed back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs, to take the 5-3 lead over the Saints. Senior
EJ Bankson, junior Maddy Meyers, and junior
Rachel Warrens all hit RBI singles to bring home the three Patriots runs.
Siena scored one in the top of the fifth inning off an RBI double and one in the top of the seventh off an RBI single to tie the game 5-5, forcing the decisive extra innings.
Both Mason and Siena were able to score one in the eighth inning, tying the game at 6-6. The Patriots and Saints remained scoreless in the ninth inning, forcing a tenth.
Siena was able to score one in the top of the tenth inning, forcing a rally from the Patriots. Despite Mason's offensive efforts, the Saints came away with the 7-6 win.
Sophomore
Carly Cooper earned the started and the loss in the game, pitching 3.1 innings. Cooper is now 7-4 on the mound this season. Freshman
Jordan Anderson relieved Cooper in the top of the fourth inning and pitched 1.2 innings for Mason. Freshman
Alexandra Anderson relieved
Jordan Anderson, pitching the remaining 4.2 innings of the game.
Game 2: Siena (9-10) vs. Mason (12-12)
In the second contest, Siena came out strong after their 7-6 win in 10 innings to take the 4-1 win in just seven innings.
Siena struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs. One of an RBI single to left field and the other off a sacrifice fly out to right field.
The Saints added a third run to their column in the top of the third inning off a solo home run out to the left field.
Mason added their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI single from Dadig.
Siena was able to score one more in the game to seal their fate in the top of the seventh inning off a sacrifice fly out to right field.
Graduate student
Cheyenne Van Pelt earned the start and the loss in the second game. Van Pelt pitched all seven innings for the Patriots, pitching her first complete game in a Mason uniform.
