Lacrosse Opens Atlantic 10 Play on the Road

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse will open Atlantic 10 play with two road games this weekend. The Patriots will play at VCU on Friday, Mar. 25 then continue south to play Davidson on Sunday, Mar. 27.

The Series with VCU 
George Mason and VCU are even in the all-time season series with a 3-3 record. The Patriots won the first three matches dating back to the inaugural match, a 16-5 Patriots win (Apr. 30, 2016). VCU has won three straight games against Mason, including the last two at Cary Street Field.
 
The Series with Davidson 
Mason owns a 6-5 record in the all-time series with Davidson. The Cats won the last two meetings, both played last season in a home-and-home series.  Mason's last win against the Cats was at Davidson, 11-7, on April 5, 2019.

Last Time Out
In its final non-conference match before Atlantic 10 play, Mason fell to Georgetown 21-5. The Patriots were led by Lauren Distad with two goals and Shannon Tuozzo with one goal and one assist. Izzy Allen led Mason with three ground balls. Shannon Tuozzo had four of the 10 Patriots draw controls.

  • Olivia O'Brien earned 18 draw controls at Howard, breaking the Patriots record of 13 set by Hannah Warpinski at Duquesne, April 7, 2017. The mark also is among the top 25 in NCAA history.
  • O'Brien will battle two of the A-10s top draw controllers this weekend. Davidson's Julianne Carey (6.33), O'Brien (6.29), and VCU's Sarah Jones (6.25) are ranked one, two, and three in draw controls per game average. Mason's Ioanna Mantzouratos (3.00) and Davidson's Riley Moore (2.83) rank in the top 10 in the conference.
  • Shannon Tuozzo leads the Patriots with 19 points (12/7).
  • O'Brien leads the Patriots with 13 goals (13/1) and draw controls (44).
  • Grad student Ioanna Mantzouratos has 17 points (11/6) and is second on the team with 21 draw controls.

Scouting VCU
The VCU Rams are 4-3 in nonconference play, 1-1 at Cary Street Field. The Rams had a three-game win-streak snapped by the Elon Phoenix in its last match, 13-8. Juliana George leads VCU in points with 17 (10/7), but also in turnovers with 17. Kelsey McDonnell is the goal leader for the Rams with 13 in seven games for 16 points (13/3). Goalkeeper Meghna Dawar has started all seven matches and has a .558 save percentage. 
 
Scouting Davidson
Davidson is 6-1 in nonconference action. The Wildcats opened the season with six straight wins before losing its last match to #8 Duke, 20-3. Junior Erin Cooke in an offensive juggernaut for the Wildcats with 31 points (13/18) and 18 assists. She won Atlantic 10 player of the week honors after notching career-highs with eight points and five goals against ECU. Gianna New leads Davidson with 20 goals (20/6). Julianne Cary has a team-high 38 draw controls. Amanda Monahan is the starting goalkeeper for Davidson. She owns a 5-1 record and a .466 save percentage. Davidson is currently undefeated at home, 4-0, and averages 8.43 assists per game, which ranks sixth nationally. The Wildcats open A-10 play on Friday against George Washington.
 
Next Up
Mason will return home to host St. Bonaventure on Friday, April 1 at 1 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
