FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of its series to William & Mary, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
Mason (7-12) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning against William & Mary (8-9) senior starter Jack Cone.
Graduate student third baseman
Danny Hosley led off with a single up the middle and with one out, raced to second on a wild pitch. After sophomore center fielder
Jordan Smith drew a walk, both baserunners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Cone unleashed his second wild pitch of the inning, with Hosley rumbling home to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
The Tribe evened the score in the top of the fourth against Mason sophomore starter
Ryan Peterson.
With one out, junior third baseman Ben Williamson singled and Cone doubled to put runners on second and third. A batter later, sophomore catcher Nate Goranson grounded out, with Williamson scoring the tying run.
The Patriots regained the lead in the home half of the fourth.
Freshman catcher
Connor Dykstra led off with a walk, and senior first baseman
Scott Morgan singled before the Tribe made the call to the bullpen for junior reliever Tom Mayer. Patriots freshman designated hitter
Nick Morgan then singled to load the bases.
Graduate student left fielder
Kamron Smith dove in a run with a single to left field, and with one out, sophomore second baseman
Brett Stallings plated another with a fielder's choice ground out to give Mason a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the sixth with one out, Ragone doubled and Williamson followed with a single to put two runners in scoring position. A batter later, Cone plated Ragone with a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game, 3-2.
William & Mary summoned senior reliever Rojo Prarie from the bullpen for the sixth and Stallings greeted him with a single through the left side to start the inning. With two outs and Stallings on second after a wild pitch,
Jordan Smith bounced a RBI-single through the left side to extend the Mason lead to 4-2.
Hosley moved from third to the mound for the seventh and retired the Tribe in order. In the top of the eighth, Williamson drove in the first of his two RBI in the game with a single to pull the Tribe within one run at 4-3.
In the top of the ninth, William & Mary sent 11 batters to the plate against Hosley, sophomore
Stephen Restuccio and senior
Hugh O'Hara, and scored six runs on five hits to take a 9-4 lead.
Kamron Smith provided a bright spot on the afternoon when hit his first home run in a Mason uniform in the home half of the ninth for the final run of the day.
William & Mary won all three games in the weekend series.
For the Patriots, Peterson allowed two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. Hosley (2-2) surrendered four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Restuccio gave up three runs on three hits, and O'Hara recorded the final two outs.
For the Tribe, Cone allowed three runs on two hits in 3.0 innings, Mayer tossed 3.0 scoreless frames, and Prarie (1-1) gave up two runs on five hits in 3.0 innings and earned the win.
Kamron Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Jordan Smith and Stallings each finished 1-for-4 and drove in a run.
The Patriots are back on the diamond at Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Straw Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.
